Hi, my name is John Achuff and Welcome to my web page!

I live in Delaware and I am 64 years old. From 1964 to 1967 I served aboard the USS Barton, DD722.

I went to work at Congoleum Corporation in November 1967, soon after I got out of the Navy. I was there 34 years, I don't have to tell you the years fly by when you are in this field. I retired a few years ago. We make sheet vinyl flooring.

It was great being in the Navy, you did your job (as mess cook) then you had your time to yourself and leave when you were in port. The last 3 or 4 years I started to think of what happened to her (USS Barton DD722). Turns out she was sunk for target practice soon after I left her, part of a reef now off the Virginia coast. A friend of mine got ahold of a retired Lieutenant Commander and got the information for me. I found out the they are having a reunion on September 13 in Cleveland, Ohio for all who served on the ship. I am going to try to be there. It would be nice to see some of my old ship mates, find out how they are doing. Then maybe we could keep in touch, by letter or email. You only get to pass this way once, so you try to hang on to the friends you have for as long as you can. I have met alot of people in the Navy and out and then you think whatever happened to them. My service number is 7791821, and I remembered it after all these years.

These were my better days.
Gone downhill ever since.
Shoulda stayed in the Navy

Thank you for checking my Home page!

I went to the firehouse and signed up in April 1989 as fire police, and now am Lieutenant. I've been with the firehouse going on 18 years and this is the best thing I could have done because all I was doing was sitting around getting old. They say it is expensive to be in the firehouse but I don't care now because you get to meet all kinds of people and I would do it all over again. Now I don't have time to sit around and it's great being out helping people. (That was another reason I went to the firehouse)
